Dr. Mitch Mitchell holds a Ph.D. in Education, with a focus on Leadership for Higher Education from Capella University, a M.A. in Communications from Regent University, and a B.S. in Business Administrations from Elizabeth City State University. His fervor and interest in serving students began as an undergraduate at Elizabeth City State University and he has built his professional career upon meeting the academic, social, and cultural needs of students as a result. While at ECSU, he was introduced to the discipline of student affairs as a Resident Assistant and a Student Government Association student leader. In these positions, he gained invaluable experiences related to student affairs, student development, peer leadership, and mentoring. These positions nurtured his passion for education and encouraged him to pursue a career that would allow him to serve students in higher education.
Throughout his career as an education professional, he has served in a variety of teaching and administrative roles working to enhance the student experience and enact institutional change. He served as the Director of Advising & Career Services at Umpqua Community College and as the Academic Counselor & Coordinator of L.E.A.F, a student leadership development program at Goshen College. While at Goshen College, he also served in the capacities of Associate Director of Community Life & Director of Intramural Sports and the Assistant Director of Residence Life, and taught first year courses on academic success, identity, and culture. During his tenure there, he was instrumental in creating institutional change to establish the inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
In addition to his administrative and leadership experience, Dr. Mitchell worked as an educator as the Instructor of Digital Media for Wake County Public Schools, Assistant Professor of Communications at Edward Waters College, and Lecturer of Communications at Elizabeth City State University.
Currently he is the Assistant Dean of Students at Winston Salem State University in Winston Salem, N.C., where he oversees a staff that is responsible for creating a holistic approach to support student personal and professional development and overall well-being for the campus community. His passion for interacting and cultivating students drives his work. It affords him the opportunity to positively change the lives of students by propelling their thought processes into realizing and understanding their infinite potential for success. His practice supports his passion by enabling him to: purposefully engage students, assess students’ needs and desires, and enhance students’ collegiate experiences by developing programs that organically but strategically bridge the gap between their academic and co-curricular experiences.
